Five Malta Karate Federation elite athletes aged between 14 and 16 took part in the 47th EKF Junior & Cadet and 12th U21 Championships held at the Budapest Olympic Centre Arena (BOK csarnok) between the 8th and 9th February 2020. Athletes competed in both Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring).
A total of 1183 athletes from 52 countries competed in 35 categories.
National coaches Michelle Vella, Joe Mizzi and Josef Antonelli accompanied the athletes together with two MKF officials – Technical Director Jesmond Schembri and IT Director Audrey Zammit.
During the championships MKF Refereeing Official Susan Zammit successfully completed EKF referee training course and obtained Kumite Judge B Licence.
“Through our active participation we are consolidating our technical aspect both in terms of athletic preparation and performance as well as refereeing, a vital part in competition karate. We are very pleased with Sue’s success in this highly technical aspect and we look at further opportunities to provide advancement to our officials.” These were the comments of MKF Technical Director Jesmond Schembri.
